Relevant Reading – An App Idea

August 28, 2013

What are you learning about?

Topic 1

Topic 2

Topic 3

Imagine if each of these topics were things like George Washington, Auto Repair and Modern Literature. What is there was a service that did something magical and found relevant information about your topics and sent it to your Instapaper account?

*Just read a post on Quora about how a Wikipedia app is one of over 100 apps that use the Instapaper API.

Now, open Instapaper and read content that will help you learn about your topics faster.

Wonder if this exists already. If so, is this not a job enough people need done or is there a communication issue that prevents people from knowing about this solution?

Stretch Goals Are Important (Or WizzyWig Won $100k in 48 Hours at a Hackathon)

“Stretch goals, as far as I understand them, are lofty goals that you set even though you have no idea how to reach them at the time.”

(Via.) An email from Jason Calacanis, found on his website here, on July 20, 2013

QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION

  1. Are these helpful for personal goals and wishes?
  2. What are the best ways to create stretch goals?
  3. Will you accomplish more than you ever thought possible?
  4. What is the importance of sharing these goals with advisors?

Possible Answers

  1. The only way to find out is to try it out and see what happens.
  2. Think of things you want to accomplish, limiting it to three, and pick something a little beyond where you feel comfortable.
  3. Quite possibly.
  4. Sharing makes one accountable and trusted advisors can better see the whole picture and provide advice, ideas and connections fro making your stretch goals come true.

Drucker on Innovation – The Time Lag

“Successful innovations exploit changes that have already happened. They exploit the time lag-in science, often twenty-five or thirty years between the change itself and its perception and acceptance.”

Peter Ferdinand Drucker. Managing in a Time of Great Change (Drucker Library) (p. 20). Kindle Edition.

A few minutes ago I was in the Kindle for Mac app and was reviewing text others and myself have highlighted in this book. The quote above jumped out at me.

What changes have recently occurred?

What are the opportunities that the future will present?

Something to think about.

Time With Audible

The above image shows my listening pattern for audio programming, mostly books, listened to in the Audible app.

As I recall from previous summers, listening time is greatly reduced. During the summer there is much more ongoing interaction with the people I work with making audio programming harder to consume. My expectation is that come September, when I resume mostly working alone, the time I spend with audio programming will return to around 30 hours a month.
