Google Moves to Address Wage Equity, and Finds It’s Underpaying Many Men – The New York Times

Google Moves to Address Wage Equity, and Finds It’s Underpaying Many Men – The New York Times:

“Most significantly, it did not address ingrained issues that, according to workplace experts, cannot be overcome simply by considering how much different people are paid for doing the same job: Women and racial minorities often do not get the same opportunities and they must overcome certain biases when they are hired or compete for promotions.”

*This is hard work and we may never get there completely. It’s important to be aware of invisible bias. Preparing people for future opportunities is important and should be done in a way that enables many people to excel. We hire people to do jobs. Help them grow their careers for company, customer and positive community impact.

Rural America’s Own Private Flint: Polluted Water Too Dangerous to Drink – The New York Times

Rural America’s Own Private Flint: Polluted Water Too Dangerous to Drink – The New York Times:

“There are no precise water-quality surveys of the galaxy of private wells that serve 43 million people in the United States, but sampling by the United States Geological Survey has found contamination in about one of every five wells.”

*Worthy read.

Can You Curate a Town? – The New York Times

Can You Curate a Town? – The New York Times:

“Curating a town as one might an art collection — or in latter days, a party or store — is not a lonely pursuit. Wealthy individuals like Mr. Resnick, well-funded nonprofits and even corporations like Walmart have begun buying deserted American main streets, hoping to reinvent them with a fresh aesthetic.”

*Intersting. How many geographic locations are available? Can they be made into magnets for people that will then need products and services that must be created and delivered locally? What is the population density or population needed to make a place economically viable? How many places require tourism as a major plank? Can this place have some other major attraction that can bring people to there? Perhaps great outdoor scenery and weather …

“Jeff Raider on Founding Warby Parker and Harry’s First, eyeglasses. Now, shaving. Mr. Raider, a co-founder of two powerful direct-to-consumer brands, says change happens faster than we think.”

*Interesting short interview. Didn’t know of the Warby Parker and Harry’s connection previously.

Why Starbucks Prices Went Up as Coffee Beans Got Cheaper – The New York Times

Why Starbucks Prices Went Up as Coffee Beans Got Cheaper – The New York Times:

“‘mobile payments now represent 20 percent of all in-store transactions in our U.S. stores, more than double the figure from only two years ago.’ I use an iPhone app to pay these days: It’s easy to transfer money without noticing the cost.

*The cost disconnect for customers who don’t pay with cash. This leads to less price sensitivity.

IDEA – Business Week iPad App + Print

Was just reading a post on Tech Crunch about the new Business Week iPad app. One of the complaints was that the content of the app is updated once per week, just like a real magazine.

IDEA

Post all the writings of their talent in the app as it is completed. Then, based on the user data and feedback from the users of the iPad app, adjust what stories are featured in the magazine. This could be done with the top five articles that readers have rated highest. This could be highlighted in a page that explains what the stories are and where readers can find them in the magazine. Magazine readers may find this curation by the crowd to be of considerable value.

Notes

The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times have a similar feature in what published articles were most emailed, read or shared. Example links are below.
