Stand Apart and Do Something Unique

“… making local commercials for small businesses.”

Quote from a Wall Street Journal article.

There are people that are doing just that. What would keep you from doing the same? You could focus on the businesses that you really like. It could be two or three shots per video. Shot one, exterior of building. Shot 2, sweeping shot of interior. The third would be a still of a Google map with the location of the business. Suggested scene lengths of five seconds, twenty seconds and five seconds.

Entrepreneur guru Michael Gerber: Businesses fail because of owners, not economy | MLive.com:

“‘We are born to create,’ he said. ‘The only reason our economy sucks is people have forgotten that. … All of you, if the entrepreneur were awakened in you, would transform the state of the economy.’”

Interesting observation. It would be an improvement if more people thought about how they could effectively create a product or service and deliver it to customers.

Commentary – Seth’s Blog: The future of the library

Seth’s Blog: The future of the library:

“The next library is a place, still. A place where people come together to do co-working and coordinate and invent projects worth working on together. Aided by a librarian who understands the Mesh, a librarian who can bring domain knowledge and people knowledge and access to information to bear.”

Great post by Seth. Not finished reading it, but even just the first few paragraphs got me to thinking about the future of libraries and the skilled Librarians that work there.

See this as a way of focusing on the WHAT, rather than the HOW. Too many people want the HOW to stay the same. The HOW can be done cheaper and more effectively as technology and ideas enable new methods to come to fruition. The WHAT stays the same, regardless of the HOW. Learning, Ideas, Value, Trade, Exchange, these are the WHAT that people want and need, Not the HOW.

The Opportunity of Now – Get It Done

GID = Get It Done.

Some things should, no, NEED to be done. Make a distinction and start doing. The time for talk is over. Make a choice and take decisive action. The time to start, the time to DO, is NOW. This might be your only shot. Second chances aren’t guaranteed.

No more excuses. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth taking to completion. FINISH! That’s what winners do. Be one.

Time Value Of YOUR Capability

It’s often hard to get quantifiable data to show (demonstrate) your value. Or rather, the incremental value you create at work. Do find a way to measure and record the results you create over time. This may take some time to find. Talk with people outside your field and ask them how they would measure success at what you do. Perhaps they will provide an imagination spark that leads to a process for highlighting your results.

People Loved The Flip

Earlier today Cisco announced it was shutting down their Flip division and that 550 people would be out of a job. Normally this would not be big enough news to generate the volume of conversation I’m seeing on Twitter. There must be something that the Flip really tapped into regarding people and their relationship with the Flip. Perhaps it has to do with strong branding, built on making a great product that was simple to use.
